Can you influence at work without formal authority?
For when you need to lead, but don't yet have that seat at the table
Welcome back to Lead with Intention!
How are you this week? What’s been your big win? Have you encountered any challenges I can help with? As always, reply here if you’d like to share any progress with me or ask a question about careers and leadership - i’m here to help.
I’m also delighted to say it has finally stopped raining (#UKweatherwatch - we’re obsessed…), and I’m ready, ready I tell you, to embrace cold weather, frosty mornings and the run-up to Christmas. My daughter’s 10 and a half, so I’m wondering, tearfully, just how many she has left where the magic is still alive! Please send me some good vibes if you have teens that still love the big day…Speaking of…
There are now just 82 days until the end of the year. Yikes. Where has 2024 gone?
As we talked about in the September career reset series, now is a great time to focus on your Q4 goals and start thinking about what you want next year to look like for you professionally and personally. I’ll be sharing more soon on some exercises you can do to reflect on the year with intention and start goal setting for 2025.
First workshop date announced!
And if you’re ready to start working towards your best 2025-self, then join me at my first online workshop later this month.
We’re going to be working on your leadership brand (in response to demand from the poll I ran recently) and ways to increase your visibility, impact and confidence as a new or aspiring corporate leader.
The workshop will run on Zoom and is scheduled for Thursday, October 24th at 12:00pm GMT for an hour. If you’re a paid subscriber to Lead with Intention, please select that ticket option and your ticket will be free of charge. If not, it’s £10.00 to attend - it’s a nominal amount that I like to call your “accountability payment” - basically it’s an effective way to help you show up to the workshop and do the work!
And now, to today’s topic.
How can you lead, when you don’t yet have the authority, position, or “seat at the table?
This is something I hear a lot from aspiring corporate leaders in my coaching sessions.
And it can present a bit of a Catch 22.
How can you show you’re ready for leadership, when you don’t yet have the authority to lead formally?
Well of course, there is always a way. And yes, it means you putting in the work! But that’s why you’re here! So let’s go…
Here’s how you can start influencing without authority today:
